Workshop: Lake Como – new tourist accommodation models and quality of living

A PolisMaker Master (Politecnico di Milano) workshop with the Municipality of Como: Airbnb, B&B, condo-hotels and dispersed hotels—opportunities, impacts and sustainability.

On Friday, 29 June 2018, at the Civic Art Gallery (Pinacoteca Civica) in Como, the PolisMaker Master at Politecnico di Milano — in collaboration with the Municipality of Como (Tourism Department) — hosted a workshop/conference focused on new tourist accommodation models.

The event addressed a rapidly expanding phenomenon at local level too: platforms and formats such as Airbnb, B&Bs, condo-hotels and dispersed hotels can offer development opportunities, while also raising critical questions about sustainability, urban balance and quality of living.

With the interdisciplinary approach that characterises the PolisMaker pathway, the workshop combined perspectives and tools across multiple domains (economic and managerial, urban and territorial, social, legal and cultural). The day started from the outcomes of a student workshop developed within the Master and then expanded into a broader discussion with public officials, professionals and stakeholders.

The debate—centred on Como and its lake—highlighted the need for a strategic approach to governance: rules, data, services and spatial planning are key to steering tourism growth while preventing distortions to the urban fabric and residential life.
