Prof. Angelo Caruso di Spaccaforno: scholar and researcher, former associate professor at the Politecnici of Milan and Turin, and creator of the PolisMaker profile. He is among the main Italian references on economic evaluation applied to urban transformation.

Translated transcript (audio in Italian):

The neologism PolisMaker originates from the Master's holistic vision, in which attention to urbs and civitas is brought together in the synthesis of polis, combining humanistic knowledge with technical-scientific knowledge.

In practice, the PolisMaker supports urban transformation choices. In essence, this profile is both an optimizer and a facilitator: a transdisciplinary figure who, without entering into issues related to architectural language, recomposes the fragmentation of disciplines into the unity of a holistic judgement, beyond the legacy of positivist culture.

Over its 18 years of existence, the Master has interpreted the main demands coming from local territories, starting with specific attention to the enhancement of small villages and inner areas when only a few were working on these topics, then moving to major urban transformation interventions and, more recently, to smart cities.

Interdisciplinarity has found, in the Master as an applied methodological framework, economic science and economic technique in the perspective of evaluating city and territorial transformation choices. This is my point of view in particular.

Economics, understood as the science of choices, is the framework within which the PolisMaker, with an interdisciplinary and holistic approach, evaluates urban transformation interventions with a view to optimality, considering the fulfilment of both material and immaterial human needs. Hence the Master's attention also to the social value of urban transformation interventions.
